The Wild Garden

The exhibition consisted of selected pieces from Andrea Aðalstein's work between the years of 2020-2022, in the medium of oil painting. The works were made with the process of the becoming self in mind, along with how it shifts between generations. This artistic study of hers was conceived as an interpretation of the inner landscape. A climate characterized by constant changes; a reality that grows and yet dissolves and perishes to rise again, in an eternal cosmic cycle. This presence was interpreted with colors and shapes that have their own rhythm. Like the garden of the wild self, which appears as it shines its light within. Unbridled but at the same time embodied by the creation that is man.

With this exhibition, the artist wanted to honor the memory of her deceased maternal aunt, Andrea Ágústa Halldórsdóttir (1941-2016). Upon her death, the artist inherited her material; an easel, canvas, paint and brushes. These changes had a direct effect on the artist and sparked her interest to explore the medium of oil painting. In her reflection inside the studio, she considered the role of her foremothers and how their experiences could possibly be interpreted through the hand of the artist.
